Quick Tips for Getting Organized

"Living a simple life has become quite complicated" – Unknown

  1. When in doubt about what to keep and what to let go, keep this concept in mind: Everything in your home should be functional, beautiful, or both.
  2. Set a date and tell others that you are GETTING ORGANIZED. This helps overcome procrastination and is a good motivation tool.
  3. Enlist a friend to assist or to at least be there to lend moral support. Organizing is much more difficult alone than with a helper.
  4. Keep it SMALL. Plan for and work on a limited area so you see success. You won't get overwhelmed and fear the job is too big to manage.
  5. Carry a small tape measure wherever you go during your organizing project. You can find good tools and containers in many places if you have your dimensions handy.
  6. Use vertical space. Go up whenever possible to take advantage of unused wall space for display or storage.
  7. Sort out and store like items together. This makes it simple to find things when you need them since they are always in one area.
  8. No wire hangers. Joan Crawford was right – they are unattractive and bad for your clothes. Recycle them at your drycleaners.
  9. No cardboard boxes. They are not dust or bug proof and any moisture can destroy the contents before you even know it.
  10. Admire your work and congratulate yourself for each organizing success!
